Electric vs Petrol Running-Cost Calculator

Estimate monthly energy spending using your own distance, consumption, tariff and petrol mileage. The starting numbers are hypothetical examples—not live prices or tested vehicle results.

Monthly electricity—
Monthly petrol—
Monthly energy-cost difference—

How the calculation works

Battery energy = monthly kilometres × Wh/km ÷ 1,000. Wall energy = battery energy ÷ charging efficiency as a decimal. Electricity cost = wall energy × tariff. Petrol cost = kilometres ÷ km/litre × petrol price.

For the default example, 800 km at 35 Wh/km uses 28 kWh at the battery. At 85% assumed charging efficiency, wall energy is about 32.94 kWh. At ₹8/kWh, electricity costs about ₹264. Petrol at ₹105/litre and 45 km/litre costs about ₹1,867, leaving an energy-cost difference of about ₹1,603.

Choose useful inputs

If your consumption figure already comes from a wall meter, it includes charging losses: enter that wall-side Wh/km figure with 100% efficiency to avoid counting them twice. For public charging, include applicable fees separately in your budget. Use a tariff that reflects additional electricity consumption, not an unrelated national average.

What the result leaves out

This compares energy spending only. It excludes purchase price, finance, installation, insurance, service, tyres, subscriptions, battery replacement and resale. A positive difference means electricity costs less under the entered assumptions; a negative one means it costs more.
