A long battery warranty is useful only when its conditions match your use. Compare the years and kilometre limit, battery-health threshold, covered components, exclusions, service obligations, transfer rules and the remedy—not just the largest number in an advertisement.
A warranty can cover a manufacturing defect without promising the original range forever. An extended plan may be optional, linked to another package or available only within a purchase window. Before paying, obtain the document for your exact model, variant, battery, invoice date and intended use.

Turn the headline into a document checklist
Save the quotation, purchase invoice, vehicle identification, battery identification where provided, warranty certificate and applicable terms together. A screenshot of a promotional banner helps record what was advertised, but it is not a substitute for the contract governing a claim. Check who administers the cover and where a claim can be inspected.
| Question | Why the answer matters |
|---|---|
| Years or kilometres, whichever occurs first? | A high-mileage commuter may reach the distance limit much earlier. |
| Defects only, or a stated health threshold? | Gradual capacity loss and a failed component are different events. |
| Which components are included? | The charger, controller and auxiliary battery may have separate terms. |
| What must be registered, and by when? | An extension may require an activation step after delivery. |
| What is the remedy? | Repair or a service replacement may be offered rather than a new retail pack. |
| Can a second owner use the cover? | Resale value depends partly on documented transfer conditions. |
Read “whichever comes first” literally
Suppose a hypothetical warranty lasts eight years or 80,000 km. At 20,000 km annually the distance limit is reached in four years. At 6,000 km annually the time limit is more likely to arrive first. Neither outcome proves the battery fails when cover ends; it only identifies the boundary of the promise.
Estimate your own annual distance from a travel log, including weekend use. If the vehicle will be used for deliveries, ride-hailing or another commercial activity, ask whether that use is covered. Do not assume a consumer advertisement applies to every duty cycle.
State of health is not the charge percentage
State of charge describes how full the battery currently is. State of health describes its condition relative to a defined reference and measurement method. A battery can display 100% charge while storing less energy than when new. Equally, a low range estimate after a fast or uphill ride does not establish a failed health threshold.
Ask how the manufacturer measures health for warranty purposes, what diagnostic report you receive, and whether there are test conditions or tolerances. Avoid using an unofficial app’s number as definitive proof. Preserve service reports and describe the actual symptom, such as an abrupt shut-down, warning code or repeatable loss of usable distance.
Current examples show why the exact plan matters
At the time of checking, Ather’s warranty page advertised an optional ten-year/100,000 km plan with an assured 70% state of health, linked to AtherStack Pro. The same page also listed other durations. This does not mean every Ather purchase automatically includes the longest cover.
For bicycles, the Hero Lectro warranty policy separates component cover and makes some extensions dependent on timely registration. A broad FAQ answer and a component-by-component policy should not be treated as interchangeable. Ask the seller to resolve any conflict in writing before choosing between offers.
These are document-reading examples, not a brand ranking. Current availability and the certificate issued with a particular vehicle control the decision. A warranty that looks shorter may still accompany a more suitable product, stronger local service or a better overall ownership arrangement.
Repair, replacement and downtime
Ask whether a remedy can involve repair, a new pack, or a refurbished/reconditioned service pack, and what condition the replacement must meet. Check whether the remaining warranty continues or a new period begins. Do not assume a replacement restarts the entire original term.
Transport and time also matter. Ask who pays for recovery, whether diagnosis or labour has charges, how an unavailable part is handled and whether a courtesy vehicle is promised in writing. Treat an informal estimated turnaround as an estimate. A free part does not remove the inconvenience of a vehicle being unavailable.
Keep maintenance and charging evidence
Read the service schedule and charger restrictions before delivery. Keep invoices, job cards and any written approvals for accessories or repairs. Use the approved charging equipment and follow the manual’s storage guidance. Do not open a high-voltage pack, bypass its protection or attempt a cell replacement based on an online tutorial.
Water resistance is not blanket cover for flooding, accidental damage or improper handling. Ask which damage belongs under insurance, which belongs under warranty and which may be excluded from both. The answer should come from the actual policy wording rather than an IP rating alone.
A practical claim record
- Record when the symptom appeared, the odometer reading and warning messages.
- Stop use when the manual or warning requires it and contact the authorized service channel.
- Obtain a dated job card describing the complaint accurately.
- Request the diagnosis, applicable clause and proposed remedy in writing.
- Keep the claim reference, communications and returned-vehicle report together.
For a purchase decision, combine this document review with the home charging guide and your expected distance. A warranty reduces certain risks; it cannot replace a workable charging arrangement or make an unsuitable vehicle fit your journey.
