A useful e-bike fits the rider, can be pedalled comfortably, has dependable brakes and can be stored and charged where you live. Motor assistance should make a suitable bicycle easier to use; it should not distract from an unsuitable frame or an impractical battery routine.
In India, “e-bike” is used for both pedal-equipped bicycles and electric motorcycles. This guide covers electric bicycles: vehicles with a bicycle frame, working pedals and electrical assistance. If you want a vehicle intended for motorcycle-style road use, see our electric motorcycle buying guide instead. The distinction affects how you ride, maintain, store and evaluate the vehicle.
An electric bicycle can be a good fit for short local journeys, mixed public-transport trips and riders who want assistance on certain parts of a route. It is not automatically the right replacement for a family scooter. Compare the actual passenger and luggage permissions, assistance behaviour, route conditions and your willingness to pedal.

What pedal assist and throttle actually change
Pedal assistance adds motor support while you pedal. A throttle, when supplied and permitted for the particular vehicle, requests electrical propulsion without the same pedalling input. The way assistance starts and stops matters as much as the number of available modes. A bicycle that adds power abruptly may feel quite different from one that responds progressively to the rider’s effort.
Hero Lectro’s official product information describes pedal, pedelec, cruise and throttle modes across its offering, while identifying detachable batteries only on selected models. Treat that as a reminder to check the precise configuration. Do not assume every electric bicycle has every mode or a battery you can remove yourself.
During a permitted demonstration, practise starting in a low assistance setting, stopping assistance before a junction and making a slow turn. Check how the system behaves when you stop pedalling and when you apply the brakes. Ask the dealer to explain the difference between a cadence-sensing and torque-sensing system if either is specified; do not infer the sensor type merely from a premium-sounding mode name.
Measure the route rather than buying for a headline range
List the return distance, road surface, climbs, parking arrangements and the parts where you are comfortable pedalling. A 7 km outward trip is a 14 km return journey before any shopping diversion. A rider who plans to use high assistance throughout a hilly route should not budget against a claim achieved with substantial rider input on a favourable route.
Range claims should state the assistance mode and test conditions. Ask whether the advertised distance was obtained in pedal-assist or throttle use, and with what load. Do not use a short demonstration as proof that the cycle will complete the entire weekly travel plan. For the first few ownership trips, keep a margin and record your route and battery indication.
Also consider the ride when assistance is unavailable. A heavier electric bicycle may be more demanding to pedal than the ordinary cycle you already own. Try normal pedalling in a safe setting and check whether the gearing suits your route. This is a practical fallback assessment, not a recommendation to deliberately discharge the battery completely.
Use watt-hours to compare battery energy
Amp-hours are meaningful only together with voltage. An illustrative 36 V, 10 Ah battery stores a nominal 360 Wh: 36 multiplied by 10. A 48 V, 7.5 Ah pack also gives 360 Wh on that calculation. The larger amp-hour figure alone does not identify the larger energy store, and neither calculation tells you how much energy the system makes usable.
Battery capacity does not directly specify range. Divide usable energy by an appropriate consumption estimate to build a model, then label the assumptions. If an illustrative cycle had 300 Wh available for riding and used 10 Wh/km under one set of conditions, the arithmetic gives 30 km. At 15 Wh/km it gives 20 km. These are teaching examples, not measured performance for a Hero Lectro or any other model.
Charging efficiency matters to the electricity bill, while riding consumption matters to the route. Mixing the two produces misleading figures. Our energy and range explainer separates them, and the cost calculator accepts your own Wh/km estimate.
Check fit, brakes and carrying weight in person
Ask for frame sizing guidance and adjust the saddle and controls with the dealer. You should be able to reach the brakes securely, steer comfortably and mount and dismount without an improvised movement. Frame shape, standover clearance and reach can matter more than a fashionable tyre size. A suspension fork also does not by itself establish that a bicycle is suitable for off-road use.
Check the manufacturer’s maximum load definition. Some specifications distinguish rider load, payload and total system weight. Add luggage and accessories using the correct definition instead of assuming that a quoted number refers only to the rider. Do not carry a passenger or fit a child seat unless the manufacturer explicitly permits the configuration and the relevant safety requirements are met.
Inspect braking feel, lever reach, tyre condition, wheel alignment, lights and reflectors. Test the route to your storage location: a heavy bicycle plus several flights of stairs can be a decisive problem. A folding frame does not necessarily make the assembled cycle easy to carry or permitted on every public-transport service.
Plan safe charging and secure storage
Use the specified charger and follow the manual’s charging and storage instructions. Have the electrical supply assessed if its condition is uncertain. Keep the charging arrangement dry, stable and clear of exits and combustible clutter. A removable pack needs a suitable charging location as well as a manageable carrying route.
Check whether the pack is designed for owner removal or technician access. A battery hidden inside a tube is not an invitation to open the frame or disturb electrical connections. Ask for a demonstration of the approved removal procedure, the battery lock and the way the connector is protected when the pack is absent.
For theft prevention, use a secure physical locking arrangement appropriate to the frame and parking location. A battery lock or an electronic immobiliser does not necessarily secure the entire bicycle. Record the frame number and keep purchase documentation separately from the bicycle. Ask the seller how replacement battery keys or access devices are obtained.
Read the component-by-component warranty
Warranty language can differ between a general FAQ and the policy itself. For example, Hero Lectro’s published warranty policy separates the frame, battery/motor/controller and other electrical or mechanical items. It also describes registration-dependent extensions, rather than giving every component identical cover. The general FAQ should not replace the terms supplied with your exact purchase.
Before paying, ask which policy version applies, whether registration is required, what proof is needed and who receives a claim. Save confirmation that any registration step was completed. Ask about the replacement price and availability of the approved battery and charger even if you do not expect to buy them immediately.
| Ownership question | A useful answer |
|---|---|
| Where can the bicycle be serviced? | A named workshop that supports both the bicycle components and the electrical system. |
| Which battery can replace the original? | An approved part reference, compatibility explanation and current quotation. |
| What happens if the display fails? | A service route, parts process and explanation of what operation remains possible. |
| Can standard bicycle wear parts be obtained locally? | Specific tyre, tube, brake and drivetrain sizes, rather than a generic assurance. |
| Does the warranty transfer? | The relevant written term, including any ownership-update requirement. |
Do not generalise legal exemptions from the word “e-bike”
Marketing labels do not establish a vehicle’s legal classification. Ask the seller for the exact model’s certification and the basis for any claimed registration or licence exemption. Confirm the current requirements with the relevant transport authority when the classification is unclear. Do not assume a pedal-equipped vehicle, a 250 W sticker or a software-limited speed is sufficient evidence by itself.
For bicycles, product standards and road-use rules are also different questions. BIS documentation refers to IS 19305 Part 1 for EPAC bicycles in its standards framework. That reference is not a universal licence exemption and does not certify a product simply because a seller mentions it. Wear appropriate protective equipment and use the vehicle within its intended conditions.
A practical shortlist for three different riders
For a short local commuter with ground-floor parking, prioritise fit, dependable brakes, predictable assistance and local repair support. For an apartment resident, battery and bicycle carrying requirements may outweigh a larger pack. For a recreational rider who mainly pedals, the feel of the unassisted bicycle, gearing and assistance response can matter more than throttle range.
Write one non-negotiable requirement for your route, one for storage and one for service. Reject models that fail those requirements before comparing accessories. The best choice is the bicycle whose complete daily routine works for you, not necessarily the one with the most electrical features.
